Our trip out of Sydney was slow despite the lack of Sunday traffic, and we covered just 120 km in 2 hours. The remaining 280 km to Dubbo took only 3 hours and gave us plenty of time to walk around the town and admire the lack of traffic. However around 6 in the evening the roads became very busy, and we assume the lack of cars earlier must have been due to a football game capturing the attention of the population. The trip west so far has been through some very green country, thanks to some recent good rain.
Our second day started early to cover the 800 km to Broken Hill, most roads between towns were 110 with the few little town requiring you to slow to 50. Today the scenery was less green but there was a dramatic increase in wild life, with lots of emus, kangaroos, and wild goats with lots of various birds feeding on the "road kill" of the aforementioned wildlife. We made it into Broken Hill to quickly unload the car and drive 25 km to Silverton to see the sunset from Mundi Mundi Lookout, here one can look out way over the plains and can see the curvature of the earth, it was well worth the effort and a wonderful ending to a long day.
